How about a chicken wire cylinder to hold the leaves/straw in place?

Now THAT is an excellant idea, and probly something I could do with only one helper!! Thank you Mesh. Right now they're in little peat pots, how close together can I plant them outside? Keeping the chicken wire circle thing in mind.??

ROFL I still have a packet of seeds Loamy sent me a few years ago as a surprise with some of the tomato seeds I had requested. I had to dig around in my seeds to find them. I will try to give them a try again this year. I have so many tomatoes, peppers, squash, beans, etc to plant . I will see if I have the energy left! I think this is why I haven't attempted them yet. I don't know about the elephant, would a lion suffice? LOL Kitt I don't think you have to mulch over the top of the plant, just a good covering over the root base? Maybe I am reading this wrong?
