(Seed categories already in place on this site, as well as banker names, so I'm going to skip that.)
Under no circumstances shall private information be used for profit. Our membership relies on honesty and trust. Member's information, such as mailing addresses, are not kept on this .com site for their protection.
THE BANK
This is how we are structured:
President: Billy Brewer "bagins". The president will assume any duties as required, co-ordinate efforts and monitor seed trade.
Vice-President/yahoo Site Manager: Carol Moss "goldpearl". The VP keeps membership records and tracking member traffic between the .com site and the yahoo location.
Vice-President/.com Site Manager: Meshelle Boyko.
Secretary: Kitt Hrabacka, "ogkitt". Kitt will monitor both sites and make sure serious questions are answered and important information gets to the membership.
Treasurer: Sharon Crawford, "crawdaddy" aka "slcrawford". Co-ordinates monetary resources, accepts donations, and helps bankers get the supplies required.
Contributors: Anyone who donates information, seeds, supplies, cash and/or skills to the bank.
Growers: Any member who takes seed that is low in supply and grows it out to renew the quantity on behalf of the bank.
Bankers: Members who will accept, store safely, and respond to seed requests.
Member: Anyone who doesn't have a job in the Seed Bank! A member can perform multiple roles within the OG Seed Bank.
Customer/Client: These are people who wish to get seeds but do not want to actively work within the bank.
A banker is perhaps the most important, time consuming position in the Bank. This is what they are expected to do:
1) Post a list of the seed varieties under his/her name, specifying the quantity of seeds for each variety (estimates on tiny seed is fine).
2) Package seeds in size-appropriate envelopes (template is available on the yahoo site.)
3) Write name of the variety, banker's name, any specific growing notes on the envelope.
4) Store the seeds in an appropriate area where light, humidity are good for dormant seeds.
5) Send out the seeds to the people requesting them in a timely fashion.
6) Keep inventory up to date.
7) Record transaction.
8)Keep an account book listing under the names of the recipients, type, variety, and amounts for future credit/debit.
9) Alert the President and membership if any variety is dangerously low, so that grower can be found.
This is what a Member/Customer is expected to do:
1) sign up with the Organic Gardening official website.
2) Register as a member on the yahoo site. This is IMPORTANT as by registering on the yahoo site, you have access to personal information. You will eventually be given a membership number as names and nicknames get confusing after awhile!
3) take the time to read this Regulations file and Seed Saving basics.
4) Pass on surplus seed to others and promote Organic Gardening methods.
Basic Transaction:
SASE (Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope) are used with in one's country.
A Customer selects the seed desired from inventory lists posted by bankers. A post of inquiry is made by the Customer to the banker(s), who responds in private email with their mailing address.
The Customer sends the SASE to the Banker, who fills the request and sends the seed back.
It is important that Customers and Members understand we would like to be paid back in seed at a future date. We ask that at least one fruits' worth of seed be returned to the bank at harvest time. The Bank will do it's best to instruct others on how to save open pollinated (o/p) or heirloom seeds. Hybrid seed cannot be saved to return to the bank.
Please keep in mind the size and weight of individual seeds. Do not send 1 SASE for handfuls! If you do, the Banker will not be able to fulfill your request. Below is a rough idea of how much seed is packaged in the little seed envelopes. These numbers are based on plant minimums for seed producers.
Beans: 30 seeds per envelope.
Beets: 30
Broccoli/Cabbage: 15
Carrots/Turnips/Rutabaga: 50
Corn: 30
Cucumbers: 15
Eggplant: 12
Lettuce: one good pinch!
Other Greens: one good pinch!
Melon/Watermelon: 12
Peas: 30
Peppers: 15
Pumpkin/Squash: 12
Summer Squash/Zucchini: 10
Radish: 30
Tomatoes: 10
Herbs: At the discretion of the banker.
Flowers: At the discretion of the banker.
AT THIS TIME, A LIMIT OF 10 VARIETIES PER REQUEST, PER SEASON, IS IMPOSED.
At THIS TIME, ONLY MEMBERS' REQUESTS FOR SEED WILL BE TAKEN.
We are a new group and need a few growing seasons under our collective belts to bulk up on seed supplies. This limit does not affect Grower members. In the future we will be able to offer seed to the general public.
Miscellanea:
In case of controversy of any kind, the President of the OG Seed Bank will resolve it. Photographs of gardens, flowers, veggies, fruit and herbs are welcomed and encouraged.
Bankers should understand that the seeds sent to them in the Seed Bank's name, are property of this group. You are only safeguarding them on the Bank's behalf. If you find a huge surplus of any particular variety, you may seek trades and swaps elsewhere, as long as the transaction benefits the group.
