By now many of us have received a few seeds from me (loamlump). This is a great forum where the growers can compare their experiences with this new open-pollinated tomato. First up for discussion is the permanent name. My Aunt Ada had given her work the name Red Hope. But now that she has passed away, the suggestion "Ada's Gift" is up for consideration. What is your opinion?

Ada's Red Hope
It preserves the name she wished to give it and acknowledges her as it's creator.

I like Ada's Red Hope too. I got the seeds you sent and will give it a shot. I do not have the best of luck growing Tomatos, so if I can grow them anyone can. For the most part I pretty much stick to my flowers. Wish me luck Becky

I'll vote for Ada's Red Hope, too. I have lots tomatoes I am growing out for seed this year, so I am passing on this one this time. Do you have enough growers yet? Carol

I got some of the seed and have planted some...we got a surprise cold snap this past week so they are still indoors for now and doing well. I should have 6 in containers and 6 in the raised beds I think Ada's Red Hope is just right

Feather,
Shelley sent me many. I seeded 24 and still have lots left. Send me your address and I'll get them out to you.
By the way, due to my out of town trip I put off seed starting so they were just sown Saturday, March 25. And, today I see signs of germination!!! in 3 of the pots.

mbrendel asked on the yahoo site about red/purple stems showing up on the Ada's Red Hope seedlings.
Has anyone else noticed this odd growth? I have got about 7 seedlings showing reddish stems, and the other 4 are normal green.
As I said to Michelle, do not pull them! We have no idea if this is going to be normal (and wouldn't it be interesting that Ada's Red Hope is a red-stemmed plant?!) and we cannot start roguing them out until a full season is behind us.

Hey, it was Meshelle Boyko not mbrendel that asked. I have 2 green stemmed and 20 red stemmed (2 of the 24 sown did not germinate). I have several off looking plants in the red stemmed ones that I will be culling at transplant today (both of the green ones are "perfect" seedlings), so I will end up with about 8 red and the 2 green to plant out. And, as I said on the other site, I will plant them into different parts of the garden so the red and green don't cross.

Sadly, due to the storm that hit last night I lost all seedlings. I'll have to start Ada's seed again along with all the other ones I lost...a number of them were blown out of the yard altogether and some were just down right waterlogged beyond hope. I thought I had them well protected but we had a tree go down right where I had the best chance to save them. I did notice 5 red stems on the Hope tomatoes and 3 green stems. One of the seedlings with the green stem had twisted, misformed leaves (only 4 leaves on it and the others...very young yet). Although, frankly, the "red" ones looked more purplish than red to me. I'll start over as soon as the tree is removed and all is cleaned up in the front and back yard. A HUGE mess but no real damage to the house or neighborhood here. I'm sorry Shelley, but I'll give it another go in the next week or so. I'm glad I kept some of the Walking Stick Kale seed for future use...I'll need to plant more of those as well Hoping for better luck, Jacki

Sorry Meshelle, about the mix up of you and Michelle B. Kind of working through a fog here.

I have about 15 seedlings, all green stems, only 2 'first' leaves so far.

Interesting...the differentt stem colors....I planted my seeds on April 1st...3 other varieties planted on the same day started to sprout, but, as of today, nothing from Ada's...maybe tomorrow...I am WATCHING THEM VERY CLOSELY!
Some tomatoes DO have darker, purplish stems, like Cherokee Purple, which is normal for them, at first...
Loamy....any more advice on these...mine aren't up yet, so I can't tell you their color yet... What do you think this difference might be? I'll keep checking here for everyone's progress! Vicki

I started 4 more seeds last week. So far only 2 have sprouted. Still no red stems for me. Some from the original batch had curled leaves, but they have now straightened out. KEWL!!
